Our reason...

...for being together starts here. As we head off to KY this weekend, I know exactly where my heart longs to be. As a child, we made the trip at least four times a year. I always worried that once my grandparents passed away I would no longer make the trip. But each year, without fail, my family has made the trip to come together with as many family members as were willing to make the trip, as well. My grandfather passed away 15 years ago and my grandmother followed two years later, but this is still home to my heart, where my grandfather was born, where my mother was born, and where I learned to love photographs that reflect my heritage. This aged picture was probably taken just before I was born, in the early 1970's, when film aged orange and glossy, but it shows my grandparents exactly how I remember them to be, always in love with one another and so happy - in front of their home and farm. This weekend, Memorial Day weekend, is my favorite because we return to visit them, honor them, and teach our little ones the importance of knowing their ancestors.
