de Dolores Hidalgo...

We set out early to hit the kilometers so that we could pit stop in Dolores Hidalgo, and still make it into San Miguel de Allende in time to spend the afternoon. This stretch of highway has truly improved in the time since we have been gone...all in preparation for the coming of the Bicentenial. We guided ourselves directly into the centro historico, where El Grito was first proclaimed from Father Hidalgo.
There, they have a countdown clock to the 16th of Septemeber - Mexico´s independence day.
No one, and I mean NO ONE, comes to Dolores without stopping for their famous ice cream. If you have never heard of it, then it is time you had...
Taste test after taste test, finally everyone decided what flavor would best suit them.
Chato went with tequila...but stole some of Aly´s limon, because he thought that it would be a better combination.
I chose a mix of Hawaiiana and Arroz con Leche flavors, while Brandan got Beso de Angel...which I have NO IDEA what it was trully made of...but he said it was kind of like a fruit cocktail flavor.
SO, as you can see, the flavors range from the completely sweet to practically crazy. One of the samples Chato tried was camaron con pulpo, which sounds completely horrid once you realize you are eating shrimp with octopus, but since he adores cocktails of this, he said it was good, but couldn´t see himself eating a whole scoop of the stuff!!
We carried on to visit Padre Hidalgo at the center of the plaza.
Then we headed over, for the first time, to visit the Museo de Jose Alfredo Jimenez.
The museum has been constructed within the house where this great Mexican singer was born. It was quite impressive for someone like me who knew very little about him other than his music.
We also got to go to the Panteon where he is buried. And what a grand tomb...a large brass sombero at the end of a great wall of rainbow colored mosaicos that label each and every song he recorded into fame.
A very interesting start to another Mexican day.

And on to San Miguel we go....

I am so fascinated by this trip..and a teensy bit jealous. You are making me ache to go explore somewhere. Somewhere old and with history at every corner. I guess I will jsut have to live vicariously through your blog posts, lol!
