generational flowers

Raise your hand if you remember those long stringy plants that I snapped a photo of back in the Spring...the time has come to show off their beautiful blooms!!

My great-grandmother, Mary Susan, took care of these flowers, followed by my grandfather, who inheirted the old homeplace. Later, my mom and her sisters each took a bit and began their own pots. My mom passed some on to me quite a few years ago, and I can't wait for them to bloom each summer. Can you blame me? Look at these full, bright pink blooms!

I replanted the pots to see just how big I could get them to spread out. These are going to be some heavy pots for the fall carry in!

Now doing some research on these little buggers can be somewhat difficult. I found that even though my family refers to them as "Star of Bethlehem" the more technical, botanical name is Ornithogalum umbellatum and they are from the Lily family. Here in Illinois they are considered a wild flower, but more information is available at: http://www.illinoiswildflowers.info/weeds/plants/starbeth.htm
