Step back about two hundred years and you just might get Brandan's full attention. He loves everthing Lincoln, as in Abraham, the 16th president. I'm not quiet so sure how it started, but when he requested a return trip (many of you will remember) to Springfield for his birthday, we obliged. Our state's capital does have a pretty impressive presidential museum, but it obviously must have really made an impact on Brandan. So it is needless to say, we had a few stops we needed to make on the way back from Kentucky before leaving. Sunday morning we gathered up the youngins and headed to Hodgensville, KY - the birthplace....
For those of you who have never had the opportunity, this beautiful state park is home to a cabin where Lincoln was born in 1809. Things are really kicking up here in anticipation of the bicentenial of his birth next February. The stone "masoleum" of sorts was built for the 100th anniversary to encase the cabin and protect it from the elements. (That's Brandan in the light blue shirt!)
Inside you will find the cabin, so small today you couldn't fatham that a family of four lived in it. Photography is allowed surprizingly enough, but no flash, PLEASE! The height of the door rocks me. Looking at Brandan and Aly it is easy to see it is not that big. My imagination and prior knowledge elude me to make the assumption that Lincoln's ancestors should have been tall....hmmm. I better not tell Brandan that...He'll want to research it until he finds the answer!
Times gone by...so simple and beautiful. It is easy to see the hardwork and handcraft that went into the construct of fences, homes and nearby bridges.
About two miles over, in the town's square, there are various monuments dedicated to the great leader. Brandan favored them both, but I think he related well to the young boy version - knowing that everyone, even leaders, must grow into their adult skin.
It is tremendous to see in person. And I've driven by them many times in my lifetime, knowing who it represented, but not giving much of a thought beyond that. Brandan shouts Lincoln everywhere he sees him, and now is begging for a trip to Washington D.C. which he is making me crave too, now!
That's my little Lincoln lover...
