A southern dinner and belated fireworks

Years have passed since I had visited the old Sulphur Wells restuarant in Kentucky. My last trip was one where my grandfather lifted me up to the old well, across the main highway, to get a swig from the rotten tasting water pump. I couldn't have been much older than three or four years old, and I couldn't believe my grandpa would want me to taste that crazy sulphur water! Ah, but the old wives tales state the curative remedies that the suplhur holds could improve your health in one way or another. The springs that flow through this area have been here for years, and I am glad I was able to return, even if it did turn the noses of Brandan and Aly for awhile. Across the main highway, for years, one of my grandpa's favorite restaurants has served up plates of unending fried chicken, catfish, country ham and red-eyed gravy alongside plenty of stewed potatoes, cole slaw, and tomatoes. I begged to go back, so we made the trip over and enjoyed one heckuva southern fried dinner with a tall glass of sweet tea. The only disappointment was the old general store had already closed before we arrived, and we didn't get to go in and buy soda pop in a glass bottle and pull the metal cap off at machine's edge. Now, most would beg to differ with me over the definition of a vacation well spent. I learned, this trip, more than any other, my family appreciates the simple things in life, and our country must be explored beyond the sandy beaches and tourist traps. I love my rural roots. I love even more that Brandan points out beautiful pieces of rural countryside that express the history of our country. In Kentucky, like other southern states, fields of corn and tobacco stretch as far as the eye can see. Old barns and tractors tell stories of the ancestors who farmed the land many years ago. Hard work and ambition layered in time worn cobwebs are found all over this area.

After our scenic route, and a day belated, we headed out to my Aunt's house and blew off some fireworks, hand-picked from a little shop in Indiana. It was just enough to light up the kids faces...
... young and old!! This goofball is a kid at heart and adores fireworks on the fourth!Lexi, Brandan and Aly's third cousin, is spending the summer with her Grandparents in KY. These three Muskateers had a blast in the cool, smoke-filled evening air.
It was a wonderful evening, filled with food and fire, unyielding times that we won't ever forget.

Candi, sounds like a great vacation. Love the picture of Chato dancing with the fireworks! Boys will be Boys, even when they are men! The 3 Muskateers are super cute too. I enjoyed reading about your trip.
