I started thinking about how the New Year would play out the other day when I read Ali Edwards' ONE LITTLE WORD post. I didn't have to think long and hard to choose a word on that day. I knew a word that means a lot to me. Today, as I record it here, it seems all the more important to me for reasons I can't begin to explain.
This year I want to UNDERSTAND.
-Understand why the world spins the way it does.
-Understand by asking questions and doing research.
-Understand who I can seek advice from and lend good knowledge to.
-Understand the difference between where we need to be and where we want to be.
Understanding is the solution to all things big and small. And just in a small amount of time spent (and a few deep breaths more) understanding can build bridges, create friendships, and explore the unseen.
It is ONE little word.
But it has so much meaning.
Being able to understand Brandan when he fusses over the inevitable would flip this house upside down and right side up. Being able to understand why education has changed a million times over in the twelve years since I started teaching, but yet there are no simple successes. Being able to understand why things just happen the way they do and there is nothing you can do to control them. But all the while understanding that there is ALWAYS another way, and God will show you the path if you are willing to listen.
I know that we saw ONE happy boy yesterday at the Chicago Bulls' game. I know that my little bookworm is ONE eager reader (Aly read through three books in the past couple of days!) I know that ONE day we will all see the gains of hard work, because there are NO EASY ways to cash in on success and love and life.
Today is ONE day. Tomorrow is another. We MUST believe that what we have today we must cherish today to have for tomorrow. It all comes from understanding.
Mushy? For some...maybe. Today it is a starting point that I hope 2011 lets us explore.
